Montessori Pre-K
Since 1973, Alpine Millburn’s pre-K program has been preparing young children for success in kindergarten and beyond by helping them develop the skills and confidence they need to become competent, curious learners. Our faculty teaches the “whole child,” focusing on both social and cognitive development while embracing and respecting your pre-K child’s individuality. Alpine’s strong academic program emphasizes positive peer relationships, cooperation, compassion, social etiquette and respect for humanity. We’re dedicated to helping your 4 ½-year-old child accomplish the early development essential to their success. At Alpine Montessori of Millburn, we give your child the best foundation for their education by fostering their strengths in a nurturing, non-competitive environment tailored to their individual needs.
Unique Montessori Pre-K Curriculum
The students in Alpine’s three pre-K classrooms hone their critical thinking and information analysis skills as well as their ability to design creative solutions by engaging in age-appropriate discussions. Our pre-K students typically have mastered kindergarten-level reading and math skills by the end of the school year. Students also hone advanced practical life skills at the pre-K level, including lacing and tying shoes, housekeeping, transferring liquid, solving complex puzzles, and social etiquette like grace and courtesy.
At the pre-K level, we concentrate on developing fine motor skills like pencil grip, writing ability and cutting while continuing to develop oral language skills and readiness for written language. Montessori language materials, such as the movable alphabet and tactile sandpaper letters, are incorporated at this stage of learning to aid in the concrete development of letters and words. We cover a range of concepts in pre-K, including upper- and lowercase letter formation, sound and letter distinction, repetition of sound patterns, auditory awareness, recognition of the children's written names, three-letter phonetic blending, hand-eye coordination and letter positioning, and narrative retention.
In our pre-K program, we recognize the many diverse levels of math readiness among our students. We individualize each child's level of math exposure to work at a pace that is comfortable for them and expose children to math concepts in both small group settings and individually. The math concepts we introduce in our pre-K classrooms include writing and recognizing numbers up to 50+, telephone numbers and addresses, simple addition and subtraction using Montessori beads, telling time, money concepts, geometric shapes, more and less than, initial measurement concepts, fractions, charts, tables and interpretation of graphs.
Alpine’s pre-K program is a full-day, five-day-per-week experience. We also offer before-and after-care for children enrolled in our early education program.
